the best Christmas markets in Europe 2025

Certain European underrated, off radar or just less known and little towns host some of Europe’s most atmospheric Christmas markets, blending medieval or quirky charm with festive traditions, home made and crafty goodies. If you’re looking for cozy, fairy-tale settings with fewer crowds than massive marketing for famous Christmas markets, these destinations are perfect.

I still miss a huge, yet independent like Christmas market in historical Lincoln that has been cancelled, despite perfectly profitable and popular. Give me this fun fair over any overhyped sparkle, inflated costs of not so hand made goods at the market stalls and stale atmosphere with huge crowds, the barriers protecting us from the haters.

I am heading to Central Europe this festive season, spending good three Christmas celebrations in my beloved UK, actually in Scotland where is it white and bright, similar to my childlish nostalgia. I will be spending time with my mother who lives in the heart of Europe and having all stress free festive season, filled with meeting wider maternal family and also Christmas market with the ice skating and Christmas carols, the concert. I am attending Nutcracker ballet on Christmas Day because it is the main day in our calendar, but I get used to celebrate on Christmas Eve and it is the case this year. We just having two Christmas big days, with Christmas Eve being a smaller on the scale in the UK, but about it later.

I will have merry go round of family and the friends meet ups, once in blue moon TV binging and also going to the theatre for beautiful music by J J Ryba (Fish) Czech Christmas Mass, compared to the cousin Bill who has only cultural idea what was the magazine Nuts. He will be drunk like a fish the next day and the day after on Boxing Day, pretending to be a footballer of the village league or the best shot (possibly with the dark eye as his youngest child, nicknamed Tornado Loo -Louis ate a half of jar with honey, overdone it into the ABC juice and he also loves beet juice and he wants to be big like the daddy – Big Willie). That’s only their family fun in their old rut.

Pour yourself the drink, make a hot chocolate, a gingerbread latte, take a deep breath and enjoy the long list to choose from. There are the great markets off the beaten path to enjoy for festive season in Europe:
